Introduction

You will be researching the Tharsis region of Mars. Below are links to THEMIS images taken of the Tharsis region.

Select one image from each group. You will analyze eight different images in total. Complete your THEMIS worksheet using that image. This will help you begin to become familiar with the Tharsis region.

The term “fossae” is applied to a shallow depression or hollow.

Cyane Fossae – Troughs, sometimes also called grabens, form when the crust is stretched until it breaks, which forms two breaks with a middle section moving down, leaving steep cliffs along the sides. Sometimes, a line of pits form as materials collapse into a void that forms from the stretching.

Olympica Fossae – A set of troughs in the Tharsis quadrangle of Mars. Parts of the fossae have been suggested to be both outflow channels as well as channels for flowing lava, routing both molten rock and catastrophic outburst floods of water at different times in Mars' geological past.

Tractus Fossae – A set of troughs.

The term “patera” refers to a broad, shallow bowl-shaped feature on a planet's surface.

Ulysses Patera – A Martian volcano.

The term “rupes” is Latin for “cliff.”

Olympus Rupes – a group of cliffs along the northern face of Olympus Mons, the largest mountain on Mars and the largest volcano in the Solar System. It also forms the northern border of the mountain.

The term “sulci” is applied to subparallel furrows and ridges.

Cyane Sulci – Located to the northeast of Olympus Mons, Cyane Sulci is a complexly fractured region of material inundated on its margins by volcanic flows.

Lycus Sulci –  A very complex region surrounding the northern flank of Olympus Mons. This area surrounds the northern and western flanks of Olympus Mons, Mars’ largest volcano.

Other

Noctis Labyrinthus – Noctis Labyrinthus, “the labyrinth of the night”, is a region of Mars between Valles Marineris and the Tharsis upland. The region is notable for its maze-like system of deep, steep-walled valleys.
